Alpha-lipoic acid is also an antioxidant. What we want to do here is protect against oxidative stress. Let me give you a little bit of a visual here. If you cut an apple in half, and you put lemon juice, Vitamin C, on half of it, and let the other just sit out, what do you think would happen? The half that does not have lemon juice or Vitamin C citric acid would turn brown. That’s oxidative stress. If you take the half that has lemon juice on it, you‘ll see that it does not turn brown. That’s because that raw material, Vitamin C, ascorbic acid, citric acid, is protecting against oxidative stress.

AHA’s and BHA’s – what these are, are alpha hydroxy acids and beta hydroxy acids. Both these raw materials help skin cells turn over at a rapid pace. They are chemical exfoliators. And don’t let the word chemical scare you, because they’re made from natural fruit acids or salicylic acid – all natural raw materials. But what they do is, they help break down the glue that holds skin cells to the surface and so they release at a more rapid pace. It’s critical in the maintenance of a healthy pink fresh-looking skin that the cell turnover keep up with a rapid pace, so they are critical in a formulation to help, as we age, our ability to turn skin cells slows down.
